Wow, tons of inspiring ideas. I put a few of those on my to-do list, thanks! :)

A dime a dozen? I really object to the idea that creativity is somehow cheap, an inexhaustible resource.

a) It actually costs a huge amount of money to equip a person with enough support during their development to be able to come up with any decent ideas...often education does its best to extinguish the process.

b) The world is full of people who can deliver cash using a great idea but the people who can have genuinely great ideas are very few in number.

mind blowing stuff, too much information ( definitely can not read in sitting ) Bookmarked it for my future reading :) thanks a lot for sharing

There are some interesting ideas here, but also some that border on a lack of ethics. Just one example is a church based credit card with an automatic tithe. The Bible continually says bad things about debt, nothing good. It would be asking a church to be hypocritical.

Taking old electronic crap to third world countries? Maybe you've never been to one. They to to Eu/USA and know what's what. Stop trying to dump your junk!

I don't know why people have to be so negative. If you read this list and are not inspired...just stop reading and have that be it. Why add sour grapes to something people did and were willing to share for free! GEEZ!!!!!!!!!!

This is a remarkable list with some terrific ideas -- can you imagine having "a service that digitizes all your photos." How helpful would that be? I've got thousands and thousands of photos to be digitized and not enough time -- would be great for those old photo albums.

And, very cool idea about "a wallpaper that is made entirely of small speakers. Sound Paper." Tune in your iPod -- connect it to your wallpaper speakers. Surround sound!

Post 373 PI would be nice however they could not be there everyday one could put cameras focus soley on the entrance and on the sink area but if facility's are used by both personel and customers I don't think that would be a good idea, I would like to see hair nets an plastic gloves being used in all restraunts even Mcdonalds.

A lot of these have already been done! But that is not the point. The point for me is to try and do those items better, faster, cheaper, etc... Great list.

I have seen some dumb ideas in my time but these rule

This is amazing and inspiring stuff. Really shows the multidimensional approaches of creative thinking being used. You can combine an endless array of things together in this world to mash up 9999 more ideas.

I've dabbled on number 12 for a while. Just can't get it going. It would be a site dedicated to mission works, church plants, and other ministries for people to help fund. Thanks for your list.

#647: BagBorroworSteal.com. It's been around for years.

Some of the others, though, really made me think, "Hey I could do that!"

The title says 998 and in the text there are 999 ? why so?

I did my part and submitted all to Cuban - http://blogmaverick.com/2009/02/09/the-mark-cuban-stimulus-plan-open-source-funding/#comment-59492

Fingers crossed. OMG Cuban is going to give me so millions. OMG OMG.

This is an inspiring list. Especially for a marketer. I quickly noticed several of the items on the list were already being done, and realized that a good number of the rest probably already had someone trying to tackle them. So what, right? Well, what I take to be the real opportunity of this list is that it is a great example of how many individuals and companies are out there that have absolutely no clue how to reach their market. There will always be opportunity for those people who master the principles of effective marketing.

Now I'm off to search for companies already doing the ideas that really spoke to me, and forge some partnerships.

i'm in final stages of implementing a crowdsourcing network that links Asia together with its incubators. effectively, that means putting resources where the ideas are.

i believe we all believe we have great untapped ideas. i was cleaning up my files circa 2000 and the 20+ business plans then, are likely to still work today, only because the tech is so pervasive and viral. but i realise i can never run even 10 of those businesses in my lifetime, so sharing is my mandate.

if we all put in 30 mins a day of our time [this is NOT some MLM spiel], we can link our ideas to a "factory of resources" for R&D, global production and distribution. venture money will be parked nearer the ideas. that effectively grants us time to pursue our dreams at our own pace.

hopefully, sincerity and integrity will not be in short supply :p

you can tell i'm not a techie. and blogs are new to me. here's the link

#93 Rent-a-wife???

Really??? C'mon. Not only can you already "rent" someone to do all of those things (hire a cleaning service, dry cleaning pickup, etc.) but is the blatant sexism necessary in this day and age?

Other than that, interesting list!

It always make me laugh when you see people who leave comments that are either negative or useless in their point. Sadly they don't get it. Imagine if people actually took the time and used their energy to contribute to conversations and build on them...can only imagine what they might accomplish. Just putting the list out there will generate other ideas that currently aren't on it. It's about possibilities and collaboration. Great work in showing what a tribe of 10 (11 if Seth too part?)people can blast out.

For example, the crutches one was interesting. Having been on them a few times they are highly inconvenient especially when they are lying on the floor-- considering one leg or another is essentially rendered unusable. This led me to a Carrot Top idea...the human kick stand. Great to use when standing in long lines (concert) or immersed in long conversations. :-)

Love the list!

# Fish Burial Kit
Its called a toilet.

Paul Rooms, that is the perfect antidote the some of the 999 business suggestions, most of which were total nonsense. Great sense of humor!
Bravo!

This is great!

Some very interesting and sometimes humorous ideas.
Motivates me to start a potential list of these business ideas for the mobile world and SMS applications. There must be thousands of possible mobile implementations of the above ideas.

Interesting. #127, I created graffitigen.com years ago.

I thought this was a great list or as much of it as I already read…still to finish. The venture capitalist consulting idea is really neat. If anyone knows of a service like this that already exists please let me know. Thank you for putting the list together. It was very funny, motivating and entertaining.

Idea #67 has been done magnificently in South Africa, with three stores called 'I Love Cupcake'

Great ideas...especially that of rent-a-wife :P

I will definitely look forward to implement atleast one of them and who knows? It might be the future !!!

Love this list. With so many folks losing their jobs, perhaps these ideas will come to fruition sooner now than they would have a couple of years ago. Desperation breeds innovation.

An aside...Here in Austin there are MANY cupcake shops. Superior cupcakes. Easy access. Buy one or buy a dozen. Yum. Sugar Mamas Bakeshop being my favorite.

#8 already exists. It's called a pressure cooker, and cuts cooking time drastically for stews, beans, etc. There are both stovetop and electric models.

Just want to say that I love this. Not all of the ideas are "great," but most are way better than a lot of business ideas I hear from common people who think they are so brilliant for comming up with a better mousetrap.

Also, wanted to let you know that I'm going to be posting this article to Twitter. HOWEVER, I almost didn't. I came to the end of your post and didn't see a "Tweet This" link, and I actually almost changed my mind about tweeting the article (but I liked it enough that I didn't). My point is, I think you're shortchanging yourself by making your readers work harder to share your posts on twitter.

All the very best,

Alex

A food service where you can email them your mom's recipes and have them make it for you and deliver it during lunch time.

Wonder if someone could cook it and send it to me for today's lunch

#88 - A service that would allow Clergy to gather real time feedback during their sermons already exist - it's called "Twitter"...

I've Twittered great points made in a sermon using my cell phone and texting to Twitter. All a pastor needs is internet access and a screen to display the Tweets. (or, perhaps just an iPhone).

great post.
i am on this one 48 Website mock-ups for people seeking VC funding and 83 VC consulting for startups.

feel free to contact me if you want to collaborate.

"794. A google laptop with all the proper Gmail applications installed."

What needs to be installed? A web browser?

Some of these ideas are great and some, not so much. Here's the real deal!

Some of these ideas will end up spawning bigger and better ideas and get people thinking "out of their box" to possibly come up with the next million dollor idea?

It could be anyone of us! Who knows?

214. Feng Shui experts that tells you the best way to put your stuff/furniture in your house.

Did I miss something on this one? because that is what they do!

Maybe you already know. besides interior, they also advise on building ur buildings: when and what to build with what and whom at where, all based on the calendar, ur(and/or ur family's/other stakeholders) birth date+time, and of course what you think you want(eg. better health, more money, fame, less fame, etc.).

My boss is totally into this. She changes the decorations in our office every beginning of the chinese new year. We even changed seats when it's needed. There are figures of animals and coins, pots with water and lots of lucky bamboos on the cabinets around us. She has a feng shui lady who comes up every year and make her suggestions.

Free Feng Shui Tip:
Apparently a china vase with girls painted on it(think chinese style painted vase) enhances your business if you're a pimp/strip club manager).

I need something/someone that helps me punch in the right passwords every time(or within 2 tries is fine too). I'm 25 yr old and I've changed my delicious password approx. 5 times. I get nervous and stop breathing each time I enter my password at delicious.

This is humiliating. Too many passwords, too little ___________.

429...too great

429...too great

This list is AWESOME! I love reading through stuff like this and I do get to thinking outside the box. I'm so glad this list was shared. My husband already has a remote PC tech business/website that we're trying to get off the ground. Too much fun!

Still reading this extensive list but ran across #34: Tribe Consulting - Help individuals (not companies) discover what Tribes they should lead and help them do it

I've been working on this for the last year. See www.abiggervoice.com.

Thanks for showing that there's no shortage of ideas, only commitment to turn it into reality (yes, money and time, of course. but commitment comes first.)

I really liked #789. I might start working on that one...

Very nice tips. Thanks for sharing!

Holy Cow Batman!

This list was Terrific. I gave 2 pages to someone, they scaned it, and then i helped them dial it down to 1 through a process i have, and he bought a domain while i got coffee. before we left the shop that day he had wordpress installed, and was working on the sales letter. 999 ideas, 2 hrs, 1 site and 1 happy camper. cool beans. here is a product for you. make this a quick list for 5 bucks and sell it.

nice post..... lots of idea.... :D

@ 24: done egregiously by www.germansimcard.net

#56 is called 'electrical tape'

but it is useful for sure!

Patrick is perfectly right. True creativity, and truly great ideas, are the most valuable commodities in the world, and rather rare. They are usually not recognized as such, and often stigmatized or disregarded at first, so despite being only fairly rare few are implemented on first creation/discovery.

Casual ideas, thrown out without idea-proofreading, prior art assessment, or other context, do average to a dime a dozen. The worthless ones are buoyed up by the occasional billion-dollar idea.
