It is hard enough finding .com domains that are available while starting a company. How many times have we thought of a great name for a company only to find that the .com is already taken? Hallelujah when we come up with a great name, run a search, and the .com is available!
It's standard practice to get the corresponding .net domain as well. Unfortunately, the .org version of your domain is usually ignored. But I think everyone starting a company with dreams of building a great brand to stand the test of time should also get the .org domain.
Myth-busting: .org domains are not just for non-profit organizations. Anyone can buy a .org domain. It's how you use it that will determine what kind of traction you get with it.
But unlike the .net domain, don't just do a redirect to your .com domain. Use your .org domain for something special.
Will your company have a non-profit charitable arm? How about a forum to address customer concerns and company emergencies? Maybe the .org domain could be a place to show the world your company's efforts in reducing its carbon footprint. How about highlighting your employees' outside volunteer work? Be open and transparent and aggregate the already public information about your company's and employees' political donations. Use it as a platform to address other constituencies outside of the usual shareholders, employees, customers, etc.
Treat it as an opportunity to add to your story.
